Synopsis

Note: A story of Exotica is non told inside chronological sequentially & significant trading tools is typically withheld from either a viewer until late in the film. A as punishment outline so doesn't reflect a viewer's actual personal experience of the cases when it unfold.

Exotica presents the disparate class action of characters whose resides come interconnected through the Exotica nightspot. Christina (Mia Kirshner) is an exotic dancer at Exotica, owned by Zoe (Arsinée Khanjian). Eric (Elias Koteas) is the club's DJ, and Christina's previous young man. Francis (Bruce Greenwood) occurs as client world health organization comes within every night & universally has Christina dance for him, which inspires Eric's jealousy.

Around his business life, Francis is an auditor, and Thomas (Don McKellar) is the gay pet store owner whose ledgers Francis is reviewing.

Francis is one of these days banned from either a club whilst Eric uses him into bouncing on Christina in a period of one of her dances (which is against the system of the club). Around a equivalent period, Francis discovers illegal activities inside Thomas' fiscal records, & forces Thomas for exposed within his conflict by having a nightclub - & i personally yet view that Francis' obsession by owning Christina has very much extra complex roots than it number one appears. A film's final scene, placed several years prior to a others, too drastically reconfigures my understanding of the characters, especially Christina.

Themes

A film deals sustaining issues of loss, grief and isolation. An crucial recurring manifestation of this theme revolves about touch - near each instance the character in the film touches some other a single, he or even even she is punished or rebuked for it. Single Thomas, already an outsider because of his gender, avoids this fate. He has a strategy for making physical modems: he buys opera tickets, and so endeavors to sell a two to an additional huhuman prior to a performance - however instead of selling the tickets for money, he will require the man residence for sex.

A lot of the characters harbour desires that it could never fulfill. Exotica occurs as dark, complex psychological study of people meet loneliness and pain, and trying, sustaining little profits, to email out.

An unlikely award
Judging by his have account, Egoyan was quite amused by one of a awards this film won: a Adult Video News award for Best Guide Adult Film of 1996.
